2009-2010 Year in Review

Busy, busy, busy.  That is one word that can be used to describe the 2009-2010 year for Troop 399.  Plenty of leaders would say that this scouting year has been the most active and busiest they've ever seen.  The amount of events, ceremonies, activities and outings that Troop 399 was apart of this past year is unrivaled in troop history.  It was a year that saw four scouts complete their Quest for Eagle.  It was a year of adventure, of learning, of honor, of hard work and of support.  Let's recap the 2009-2010 year in Scouting for Troop 399 North Babylon:

W.I. FAIR PROVES TO BE HUGE FUNDRAISER AGAIN
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2009
For the seventh consecutive year, Troop 399 partook in the annual West Islip Craft Fair at the West Islip Public Library.  Scouts, up bright and early at 5 AM, sold breakfast sandwiches and coffee to vendors in the morning and then kept the grounds clean and garbage-free all day long.  Meanwhile, the adults were busy at work selling hundreds of hot dogs and cold drinks to fair-goers.  The fundraiser was once again, an outstanding success!  In addition to the sales profits, the West Islip Beautification Society awarded the boys of Troop 399 with a heavy check for all the hard work they displayed all day long.

SEVEN EAGLE COURT OF HONORS THIS YEAR

OCTOBER 2009 THRU JUNE 2010

Troop 399 set a personal record in the number of Eagle Scouts that they celebrated in one year.  By celebrating, we mean hosting elaborate and prestigious Eagle Court of Honor Ceremonies for our scouts.  It started off in October, when Eagle Ceremonies for Sean Hinphy and Bobby DaVolio were held in a span of three weeks.  It continued with the honoring of Scott Gustafson in January of 2010.  399 celebrated three ceremonies in the month of May as John Fatuzzo, AJ Squatrito and Paul Mezzacappa all began to don their blue Eagle neckerchiefs.  And last but not least, Kevin O'Brien was honored on June 13th.

SEPTEMBER 2009 THRU JUNE 2010
In addition to celebrating a Troop record 7 Eagle Ceremonies, Troop 399 scouts conducted another record six Eagle Scout Leadership Service projects in 2009-2010.  It started in September with the completion of Joe Scaduto's beautification project for the North Babylon Entrance Sign.  In November, John Fatuzzo led a project that involved the installation of a flagpole and beautification for St. John the Baptist High School.  Over the winter, Kevin O'Brien led the construction of bat boxes that were installed at Zahn's Park in Lindenhurst. Daniel Rohan coordinated a town-wide food collection for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in West Islip.  In June, Alex Marange & Jonathan Quarant completed projects at Our Lady of Grace Church in West Babylon and at North Bablyon High School, respectively.

CAMP POUCH - ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE - NYC HISTORIC TRAIL

During the winter months of 2010, Troop 399 took part in three outings to New York City, the city that never sleeps.  And neither did our scouts with all the excitement.  It started on the final weekend of February when Troop 399 spent a weekend at Camp Pouch in Staten Island, New York City's  only Boy Scout Camp.  Next, nine scouts from Troop 399 represented the Boy Scouts of America in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, marching down Fifth Avenue to celebrate 100 years of Boy Scouting.  Two weekends later, 30 scouts and adults embarked on an 8-mile historic trail through Lower Manhattan that allowed troop members to see numerous famous and historical sites in NYC.

TROOP'S FIRST SNOW SPORTS TRIP
399 GOES TO  BIG BOULDER FOR SNOWBOARDING & SKIING
On January 31, 2010, over 20 scouts and family members attended Troop 399's first Winter Sports outing.  Scouts took to the hills to snowboard, ski, and snow tube at Big Boulder mountain in Blakeslee, PA.  Along the way, eleven scouts earned their Snow Sports merit badge.  It was a perfect winter day for a Troop 399 first.

TROOP CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY

DINNER CELEBRATION IN MAY HONORS HISTORY OF 399

On May 15, 2010, Troop 399 kicked off the celebration of Troop 399's first thirty-five years of charter with an Anniversary Dinner held at Cross of Christ Church in Babylon.  Former and current leaders of Troop 399 were honored at the dinner.  Memories were re-visited, pictures were shown and much fun was had by the spirit of Troop 399, past and present.  It was an event that took an unbelievable amount of planning but was well worth it in the end. .
